WALL'S FARM, Little Witley |
||||
The apostrophe in the name of this farm would indicate that the name was derived from the surname Wall. In Holt and Great Witley, Wall was a common name from at least the mid sixteenth century. In the Holt registers the first specific reference to a Wall from Little Witley is in 1612. This gives weight to the argument for the origin of the farm’s name. Wall’s Farm no longer exists. It was subsumed into Little Witley Farm before 1793, at which time it was referred to as ‘late Wall’s Farm’. Although already ‘lost’ its fields were listed separately from the bulk of Little Witley Farm in the rent book of that year. The old farmhouse and timber and tile barn, stable and hop-kiln were all in poor state of repair. Situated between Chapel Farm and Thomas’ Farm it ran to nearly 40 acres at one time. The land that was Wall’s Farm was combined with Chapel Farm for the estate sale of 1920. |
