Chapter 12: TYLER OF STOULTON

The name Tyler is derived from 'tiler or tile-maker' ;the tiles in question being floor tiles rather than roof tiles. In the late twelve century occurred in the Old French form le Tuiler. This form appears to have soon died out to be replaced a century later by the Old English le Tyeler and similar. It is from these later forms that the names Tyler, Tiler and Tylor originate.

'Our' Tyler family starts with William Tyler, a carpenter who was born in Stoulton in about 1778. Stoulton is scattered collection of hamlets to the northwest of Pershore. William had a cottage small peice of osier bed on glebe (chruch) land for which he was liable for tithe (church tax) and land tax. He lived in Stoulton all his life, but married his wife Elizabeth Haines/Haynes in St Peter's in Worcester. Elizabeth had been born in Fladbury, but perhaps was resident in Worcester when she married William.

Between about 1806 and 1822 William and Elizabeth had at least six chidlren. Their first child, William, followed in his father's footsteps and became a carpenter also. First he worked with his father in Stoulton, before moving to nearby Spetchely. William's brother, John, became a market gardener and shop keeper at Windmill Hill, one of Stoulton's hamlets. John had just over four acres (approx 1.75ha) of land which he held from William Acton of Wolverton hall. John married Hannah Green of Loxley, Warwickshire, in St Helen's, Worcester, on 20 September 1830. There followed five children in the proceeding eleven years. The oldest of these became the station master at Marston Sicca in Gloucestershire. George, the next child, became a confectioner and baker; first in Malvern Link then in Aston and Bordesley, Birmingham. George's wife, Mary Ann (nee Edwards) had thirteen children, only one of whom died as a child. One of George's children, Nellie Ruth, was to marry Frank Thornhill a baker. The couple possibly met through the trade shared by Frank and Nellie Ruth's father. Both died in Birmingham; Mary Anne in 1909 and George two years later. Another child, Daniel George, became a schoolmaster in Hansworth, Staffordshire. At the turn of the century he played host to Frederick Beecher Edwards, the son of his mother's father's second wife.

George's younger brother became a market gardener like his father. Oldest sister Emma married a local farmer, William Proctor of Thorndon whilst younger sister Jane remained unmarried.

William and Elizabeth's third son Joseph was a tailor in Stoulton. He did not marry. Little is know of Joseph's brother Henry other than he married Elizabeth Wood and raised a family in Worcester. Susannah was a dressmaker in Stoulton, perhaps working alongside her brother, Joseph.
