Chapter 11: JAMES HICKS - SHEPHERD

The family name Hicks (and Hickson) is derived from a pet or nick-name name for Richard. Hicks, as Hikke, occurred as a surname in thirteenth century Yorkshire, however this occurrence probably did not survived as a family name for its distribution pattern in 1881 points to a West Country origin for the name as it used by today's family members.
