The Internet

As each week passes the Internet becomes more useful as a source of genealogical and local history information. Individuals establish 'homepages' or 'web sites' where they publish their genealogies and family histories, organisations and individuals publish indexes of census returns and trades directories, education establishments and local authorities publish past and current location details, and companies publish details of their activities, past and present.

A number of sites are of particular usefullness and interest to the on-line researcher:

http://www.genuki.org.uk/ - The on-line starting point for UK and Irish Genealogy.

FreeBMD - still under development - aims to index all UK civil registration index entries for the period 1837-1901.

Cyndi's List - very useful site with over 120,000 genealogy related links.

THE FEDERATION OF FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETIES

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission - includes and index and burial or memorial details for 1.7 million Commonwhealth soldiers and civilians who died in the two World Wars.

Google - one of the best Internet search engines.

Old-maps - Nineteenth Century maps.

multimap - up to date maps and aerial photographs.
