Chapter 5: Samuel Ingley (c1763 - >1822)

Samuel Ingley was a butcher, an occupation sometimes associated with farming and hence his father’s status as a yeoman. He married Sarah Willitts in Rowley Regis parish church on 30 June 1788. The couple’s first child was born within four months of the marriage. At least thirteen more followed in the proceeding twenty-six years. Ten were baptised in St Peter’s, the parish church of Cradley and four in St Giles’, Rowley Regis’ parish church.

James, Samuel’s father, left him two messuages (small properties) in Cradley Heath. When James wrote his Will in 1822, one property was occupied by George Homer, the other by Elijah Williams.

Samuel and Sarah’s first child, James, was baptised in Cradley on 3 October 1788. He was buried in Rowley Regis two days later, and appears to have been re-baptised in this parish church on the same day. Nothing much is known of the lives of Maria, Cassia, Benjamin, Samuel, James, Thomas, Josiah, Keziah or Maria.

Of Samuel and Sarah’s other children, Sarah married Sargant Sargent (sic) Homer in Kingswinford parish church and had a family all baptised in that place. Sargant Sargent, the son of Benjamin Homer, had been raised in Brierley Hill. He was a blacksmith by trade and lived in Commonside, Kingswinford, all his life. When Sarah died (before 1861) Sargant lived with his son Mark, a carter, who had a wife and two sons of his own. Sargant, Mark and Marks' wife Elizabeth all seem to have died withina ten year period, for in 1871 Mark's son George was an orphan. Mark's brother John was a coal miner, first in Kingswinford, then in Tipton. All of John's sons were also coal miners as was Mark' brother William. Edward followed his father in to blacksmithing.

Sargant Sargent Homer had at least five siblings, one whom was named Homer Homer!

Titus Hingely was a forgeman who married twice, once in Edgbaston, the second time in Clent. Forging was the process of rolling or hammering iron into shape, usually with the aid of heavy machines.

Jeremiah married Elizabeth Hadley in Harbourne parish church. The couple had eight children. The first two were born at Cradley Heath, the rest at Surfeit Hill. All were baptised in Rowley Regis parish church. Throughout the period that his children were being born, Jeremiah was an iron puddler. His job consisted of using a long iron bar to stir molten iron so that the carbon within the cast iron starting product could react with air and produce wrought iron. Caroline Elizabeth, Jeremiah's oldest child, married wheelwright Thomas Burley. The couple did not have any children of their own, but played host to various young family members at different times, in addition to two wheelwrighting apprentices that lived-in. Following Thomas' death Caroline worked as a coachbuilder and continued to host various nephews and neices. Like his father, Philip Hingley was a puddler living in Surfeit Hill. He married and had family. Herbert, Jeremiah’s youngest son, became a wheelwright in Wollescote as did his son, David.

Jeremiah's younger brother, Emmanuel, became a shoemaker. He married and lived at Surfeit Hill then Gosty Hill. Following the death of his wife he moved to Birmingham where he practiced his trade from lodgings.
