Chapter 3: Joseph (H)ing(s)(h)el(l)ey (1678-1728)

Little is known of the life of Joseph. He married Hannah Har(r)al(l) on 5 May 1703 in Rowley Regis parish church, had seven children baptized there in the proceeding twenty two years and was buried there on 24 November 1728. He died aged fifty, meaning that he was born in approximately 1678. Joseph was, apparently, illiterate, for at various times during his life his family name was recorded as Hingsley, Ingeley, Ingelley, Ingsley and Inghley. His wife, Hannah, was one of three known children born in Rowley Regis to John and Ann Harall.

Joseph and Hannah probably started their married life away from Rowley Regis for the first recorded child was Joseph, who was buried at Rowley Regis in 1707, four years after the couple married. Their next child, Joseph, was born in 1708. There is likely to have been at least one child born between their marriage in 1703 and the birth of the first Joseph.

The surviving Joseph married Mary Downing in Halesowen’s parish church, St John the Baptist. The couple had at least five children of their own.

Like to Hingleys and other related families, the Homer family was well established in the Black Country and was related to the Hingleys in several places on the family tree.
