Chapter 22: Eggleton - Auctioneers and Solicitors of Gloucester

There is a successful firm of solicitors, R A Eggleton & Co, that has several offices in and near Gloucester. Whilst the proximity of this family name might suggest a link with the Eggletons of Cheltenham, this has proven not to be the case. The Eggletons of Gloucester originate in the Horncastle area of Lincolnshire, where William Johnson Eggleton and his siblings were born in the mid nineteenth century. William Johnson married Eliza Russel in his home area, but soon moved to Sudbury in Derbyshire. He died in the late 1870s leaving his widow to raise their three young sons and a daughter.

The oldest son, later moved to Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire where he worked as a short-hand typist clerk. Following this he became a public accountant and auditor in College Court, Gloucester. Either William Russel senior or his only son, William Russel junior, went on to form the company Eggleton, Tomkins and Co., accountants and auditors, working out of the Midland Bank Chamber in Gloucester city centre. The company then became simply Eggleton and Co. working out of St Nicholas House on Westgate Street.

William Russel senior’s brother George Henry was a carriage builder working in Burton, Staffordshire. Geroge Henry’s son, William Vernon, appears to have joined Eggleton and Co. as an accountant. The present company R A Eggleton & Co., solicitors, is presumably related to the Eggleton and Co., accountants and auditors.

Frederick, the second brother of William Russel senior became an India rubber tyre maker and lived in Kings Norton, Birmingham.

Descendents of Constance Mary Eggleton are trying to trace her subsequent history after 1919: Constance Mary Eggleton was born in Ross-on-Wye in 1895. She emigrated to New Zealand around 1913, and her daughter Constance Daphne was born in Wellington in July1914. She was last known to be in Wellington in 1919 and most likely left New Zealand soon after. Her subsequent details are unknown to descendents. Anyone with any information is invited to contact her grandson, Graeme Wake via e-mail at g.c.wake@massey.ac.nz
