William moved from his hometown of Cheltenham to Birmingham, where he worked as a railway signals iron finisher. He married Florence Ward in Aston in 1901, and the couple had six children. The marriage collapsed however with Florence coming home one afternoon to find that William had left taking Elizabeth (born 1903) with him. Florence,was left alone to bring up Arthur, then a baby, his brother William, only a year older, and their eldest child Floss (born 1901). Florence never remarried. Sadly, Elizabeth had no any further contact with her mother or siblings. She had a family of ten children of her own.

Florence is described as being a 'lovely sweet lady who is remembered fondly by her Grandchildren in Birmingham' who lived in the same courtyard as her in their early childhood. In her declining years Florence lived with her daughter Floss in Birmingham.

Florence’s son Arthur John worked as a glass beveller in Birmingham. He married Winnie Smith in Smethwick. The couple had eight children one of whom, Edward Peter, had a painting and decorating business employing up to 8 painters at one point, however for the last 10 years of his life he worked as a sub contracting building project manager.
