Chapter 11: ROWLAND Of Winchcombe and Cheltenham, GLS

The names Rowland, Rowlands, Rawland, Rolland, Roland, Rollons and Rolance are all related. The name occurs in Britain, France, Germany and Poland. It is generally derived from the Old German, 'Hrodland', which means "famous land". In early times it was a popular name due to association with Roland, a legendary French hero whose story is told in the epic 'Chanson de Roland', where he is a nephew of Charlemagne (742-814), killed in battle with the Saracens. The name was brought to Britain by the Normans and is first recorded in the Domesday Book as Rolland. The name occurs as a place name in Derbyshire and Sussex, where it is derived from from Old Norse 'rá' = roebuck and 'lundr' =wood or grove.

Due to its early use as a first name, it has a a widespread UK distribution as a derived surname.

Number of Rowland families in 1891

The earliest know member of 'our' Rowland family was Nathaniel Rowland, who is first recorded when he married Ann Tarran on 7 February 1697 in Winchcombe parish church. Nathaniel and Ann appear to have at least five children born between 1697 and 1707. At least four of these children survived to marriage. The oldest, Mary, married James Stevens/Stephens and had five children of her own. Mary and James oldest daughter, Elizabeth married Joseph Ind. Sarah, one of Elizabeth and Joseph's daughters, married Charles Rowland, grandson of Nathaniel and Ann via their youngest son, Charles Sen. Charles Sen. was married to Elizabeth Tarran, who was no doubt a related to Ann.

Charles and Sarah's oldest son Robert was the parish clerk in Winchcombe. John, one of Robert's three sons, was first a stocking weaver, then a hairdresser. John and his family followed this latter profession for many years. John lived on North Street in Winchcombe for most of his life. John's sons James and Robert Henry both became hairdressers. Both moved to Cheltenham, where all three of his latter's sons learned the trade. Robert Henry's oldest two sons worked as hairdressers in Cheltenham, but his youngest son moved to Birmingham where he continued to practice his trade. James first worked from Albion Street in Cheltenham, before taking an inn, the Bee Hive, in nearby Prestbury during the 1850s. James' son Francis also later worked as a hairdresser, following periods as a porter, a 'professor of music' and a tobacconist. His hairdressing business was also on Albion Street, a few doors from where his father had traded at least thirty years before.

Another son of Charles and Sarah, Charles, was an agricultural labourer living on the edge of Winchcombe. Charles' wife, Mary, bore eight children. It was one of these, Hannah, or Leannah as she was varioulsy known, who married Daniel Eggleton (chapter 10). Two of Hannah's brothers, Charles and Joseph, were agricultural labourers.
