Chapter 9: James COOPER (c1850-1924)
Like two of his brothers, James Cooper was bricklayer. He married Catherine Field (chapter 10) in the winter of 1868. The couple then lived at Park Buildings in Langley. Around the mid-1870s they moved to 13 Broad Street, just three doors down from James brother John and half-brother Thomas. They were at 26 High Street in 1891, and in neighbouring Spring Street the following year. Two years later they were back on High Street, until moving to 7/7a Arden Grove in the summer of 1897. They had not moved far, for the properties on Arden Grove backed on to those on High Street. They remained at Arden Grove for the rest of their lives. James died on 16 August 1924; Catherine died ten years later, on 14 June. They share a grave in Rood End Cemetery.
James and Catherine had eleven children, eight girls and three boys, born between 1869 and 1887. All appear to have lived in to adulthood. Little is known of their first child, Sarah. Florence was the second child. She married William George Evans, a boilermaker, in 1892 and then lived at near her parents at 3 Arden Grove. Florence and George had two daughters, Florence and Clara/Clarice, both of whom died in the 1980s. Florences husband, William George Evans, worked at the ICI plant at Billingham on Teeside. Clara went to live with her sister when William George died.
James and Catherines daughters Clara and Beatrice (aka Beattie) remained spinsters. In the 1890s they lived at 71 Moat Road, which was to become the family home. They were living at 88 Dog Kennel Lane in 1945. In the 1960s both sisters were back at 71 Moat Road, which was by then known as Lancevile. Beatrice died in March 1962, at Sandwell Nursing Home. Clara died nine months later. Annie, Claras younger sister, was described a general servant in 1891, but was still living at home. She married Luke Bradley (see chapter 7) in St Michaels, Langley, on 15 May 1897. The couple had no children. Lily Cooper married George Edward Carr in the same church two months later. The Carrs had one child, a daughter Lily, who married Jack Beddow. Amy married John James Bentley (chapter 7), again at St Michaels and in September of the same year as her two sisters.
Frederick Duncan was an engineer. He married and lived at several addresses, including Spring Street, Junction Street South and Vicarage Road. He had three children, the oldest of whom died at the age 21 of appendicitis, at Luke Bradleys house. Frederick Duncans sister, Elizabeth (aka Lizzie) married William Hill and had five children, all of whom went on to marry.
Like his father before him James (jun.) was a bricklayer. He lived at 71 Moat Road until his death in 1939, at which time his son Lancelot (aka Lance) James took on the property. Lancelot James married Iris Jean Haycock and raised their two sons at Lanceville, before moving in 1958. His sisters Clara and Beatrice then took on the house.
There remains one other child of James and Catherine to consider. Ernest became a confectioner, owning a sweet shop situated at 39 Crosswells Road until his death in 1949. Dorothy May Pearson Bagnall was Ernests wife.
