Chapter 15:The TUSTIN Family of Winchcombe
Tustin is a very ancient name. It is derived from the Old Norse and Danish Thorsteinn and Thorsten (Thors stone) respectively. In Normandy it became the Norman name Turstinus and Turstenus, which led to the French names, Toustin and Toustain. Variations on the Norman and French versions were present in England by the time of the Domesday survey in 1086. These were later Anglicised to the versions of Tustin(g) and Tutin(g) with which are familiar today.
Historically the name had a high concentration of occurance in Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and Warwickshire.

Our story starts with of John Tustin(g), third child of Edward and Ann, who was baptised in Winchcombe parish church on 9 December 1716. There had already been Tustins in Winchcombe since at least 1638. John went on to marry Anne Tayler in neighbouring Didbrook parish on 22 September 1742. The couple had only three known children, William (I), Ann and Thomas; all baptised in Didbrook.
William (I) married twice, first to Jane Allen in Willersey in 1773, then, 28 years later, to Elizabeth Shorey in Winchcombe. He died only two years after his second marriage. William (I) and Jane had seven children together, all born in Winchcombe. One child is known to have died and two, Sarah and William (II), are known to have married. Sarah married John Hart in 1801. William (II) married twice. His first wife had three children. His second had two children, William (III) and Ann. William (III), was baptised on the same day as his parents were married! Ann went on to marry John Woodford (Chapter 12).
Like so many of his compatriots, William (III) was a labourer, sometimes in the fields and other times in a local brickyard. He married Sarah Sadler and fathered seven children. In 1841 his mother was living with him and his family at Hailes Street. Ten years later his mother was still living-in a, but was by then a blind pauper.
By the early 1880s William (III) was widowed and living with his daughter Matilda and son-in-law George Andrews and their large family, in Silk Mill Road, Winchcombe. Matilda had worked in the mill as a young woman. George and those of his children old enough to work by the early 1880s were all general labourers. His daughter Mary worked in a paper mill.
William (III) had another daughter, Sarah Ann. She married Winchcombe born John Wiltshire in 1863. John too was general labourer, who was employed breaking stones at the age of ten. He came from a family of relatively poor agricultural labourers, having an uncle who in 1851 was trying to raise a family whilst living a paupers existence. Sarah Ann and John lived first in Hailes Street, then Tanners Yard.
One of Sarah and Johns daughters married in to the Parkes family, who were again general labourers, however her mother-in-law had been born to a family of blacksmiths, the Hawkes.
Sarahs older brother George served as an able seaman in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve during the First World War. He was killed in action on 16 July 1917 and is remembered on the memorial at Orchard Dump Cemetery, Arleux-En-Gohelle, Pas De Calais in France. He left a widow, Annie, who was living at Chandos Street in Winchcombe at the time.
